CCU President Announces Update On Hwy 544 Pedestrian Bridge
The Department of Transportation will manage the planning and construction with the pre-construction phase taking 12 to 15 months.
Coastal Carolina University’s president announced an update regarding the planned Highway 544 pedestrian overpass.
James Winebrake said that the overpass is expected to be completed by 2028. That’s after the school finalized an agreement with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. The pedestrian bridge will be constructed on 544 at Founders Drive on Coastal’s campus.
It was first proposed in 2016 following a fatal hit-and-run crash along 544. Discussions were renewed recently after another fatal hit-and-run took place along the highway during move-in weekend, nearly two months prior to the agreement.
The Department of Transportation will manage the planning and construction with the pre-construction phase taking 12 to 15 months.
