New York City High-Rise Building Evacuated Due To Collapse Scare

A high-rise building in New York City had to be evacuated Tuesday morning after authorities said it was at risk for collapsing.
The 37-story building along East 42nd Street in Manhattan was once the corporate headquarters for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said multiple streets around the building have been temporarily closed off to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. At least 150 fire and EMS personnel were on the scene.
Tuesday’s collapse scare involving the structurally compromised high-rise building may have been triggered by the weight of a new addition atop the building. The building’s developer said the tower’s upper 15 floors were undergoing renovations to expand outward, making them wider than the floors below.
The two support beams that visibly buckled on the 21st floor may not have been properly reinforced. Authorities described the situation as “extremely serious” and an investigation remains underway.
