Georgetown Co. Library To Unveil Harriet Tubman, James Bowley Statue

The statue displays Tubman and a young Bowley positioned on an ascending staircase engraved with the words "Nurture" and "Inspire."

The Georgetown County Library is set to unveil a new statue Thursday.

The sculpture will honor Harriet Tubman. It’s dubbed ‘Whispers of my Ancestor’ and depicts Tubman whispering into the ear of her grand-nephew, James A. Bowley, one of the first people she led to freedom through the underground railroad.

The statue displays Tubman and a young Bowley positioned on an ascending staircase engraved with the words “Nurture” and “Inspire.”

The statue will be dedicated at 4:30pm in the children’s department of the library and will be on permanent display.

The dedication ceremony is open to the public and will feature remarks from community leaders, the artist, and historians. A reception will take place after.
