Chemical Tank In Washington Collapses Killing At Least 1, Injuring Others

The tank at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview contained a chemical mixture known as "white liquor."

At least one person was killed and nine others were unaccounted for Tuesday after a tank containing a chemical collapsed in Washington.

The tank at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview contained a chemical mixture known as “white liquor.” That’s a corrosive chemical mixture used in the paper-making process.

Officials said the tank contained around 900,000 gallons of the substance. Nine people were injured in the collapse, including one firefighter ranging from minor to critical.

Authorities say around 90,000 gallons may still remain inside the damaged tank, which remains unstable and continues to complicate efforts. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
