The grand opening of the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial at Warbird Park is set to be held on Memorial Day.
The highly anticipated event is expected to draw a crowd of over 1,000 people. Back in January, crews broke ground on a nearly $1 million memorial that features a 9-foot tall by 50-foot long wall, including stone work, a bronze letter quote and artwork of a huey helicopter.
The memorial also has life-size statues and seating blocks that will display the seals from each branch of the U.S. military. Medal of Honor recipient and Vietnam War veteran Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston, who is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, will be the featured speaker.
The ceremony will also serve as the city’s annual Memorial Day Remembrance event with a flag-raising, battlefield cross ceremony, and a missing man table. There will be music by Festive Brass, a rifle salute, taps, and more. The event will be held May 25 at 11am.
