Bennettsville Police Seek Funding For Gunshot-Detection Technology

The move aims to address concerns expressed by many of the city's residents regarding the discharge of firearms within city limits.

The Bennettsville Police Department is seeking grant funding for gunshot-detection technology.

The funding would implement advanced technology that can detect and pinpoint the exact locations where gunshots occur.

The move aims to address concerns expressed by many of the city’s residents regarding the discharge of firearms within city limits.

Police did not address the cost of the system but added that it would also improve officers’ response times and help them quickly identify problem areas.

The move also comes after a change in state law in May of 2024 that allows legal residents 18 years of age or older to carry firearms openly or concealed without a permit or mandatory training.

While waiting to hear a response about the grant application, the department is taking other steps to address problems. That includes a continued effort to support gun education and safety programs and promote “responsible firearm ownership.”
