Sabastian Sawe Shatters Marathon Milestone

Sabastian Sawe beat the previous men's record by 65 seconds.

A Kenyan runner shattered a world record at the London Marathon Sunday.

Sabastian Sawe won the 26.2 mile race in one hour, 59-minutes, and 30-seconds, becoming the first athlete to run a marathon in under two hours. He beat the previous men’s record by 65 seconds. Sawe also won the London Marathon last year as well as the Berlin Marathon. He said Sunday’s accomplishment was one to remember and credited the large crowds with helping give him the extra push he needed to keep up the world-record pace.

Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha also finished the course in under two hours, but 11 seconds behind Sawe. Separately, Ethiopian runner Tigst Assefa broke her own women’s world record winning the London Marathon in two hours, 15-minutes, and 41 seconds.
