Democratic Senators Urge President To Use 14th Amendment To Raise Debt Ceiling
If the 14th Amendment is used, the Nation's debt limit could be raised without having to pass legislation through Congress first.
A group of Democratic Senators sent a letter to President Biden urging him to invoke his constitutional authority under the 14th Amendment to raise the Nation’s debt limit.
The Senators said the spending reforms that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has demanded in exchange for raising the debt limit, are unacceptable.
The letter explained their opinion that the president should avoid Republican lawmakers requests by raising the debt limit unilaterally, which is something that has never been done before and is expected to be challenged in court.
The letter comes amid a time where the debt ceiling is an on-going debate within lawmakers as Republicans want to raise the debt limit and cut certain costs, while Democrats want to raise the debt ceiling without any strings attached.
