Seven Virginia Deputies Charged with 2nd Degree Murder

The deputies turned themselves in on Tuesday and are on administrative leave.

On Tuesday, the seven sheriff’s deputies in central Virginia were arrested and charged with second degree murder for the death of an african american man. 28 year old, Irvo Otieno, died on March 6th at a mental health facility run by the state. As he was being transferred from a county jail to the facility, a video released of the incident shows that during his intake process, while handcuffed, he was held on the ground by all seven men for 12 minutes. The prosecutor for the case said he died of asphyxia due to smothering. His official cause of death has not been revealed. The Henrico deputies turned themselves in on Tuesday and are on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
