The tradition dates back to the late eighteen hundreds, when Christians would take their candles to church to have them blessed for the remainder of the winter. The National Centers for Environmental Information doesn’t give Phil a passing grade for accuracy though, saying over the past ten years he’s only been right 40 percent of the time.
