Tokyo Olympics Begin, Opening Ceremony Flag Bearers Announced
The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics are officially underway after being delayed for over a year due to the pandemic! Competitions began yesterday with Japan’s softball team facing off against Australia at the Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium. The opening ceremony will be held Friday and it was revealed that basketball star Sue Bird and baseball infielder Eddy Alvarez will serve as flag bearers for the ceremony. Bird has won 4 gold medals with the team dating back to 2004. Alvarez plays for the Marlins and won a silver medal in speed skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics. One male and one female will represent each nation during the ceremony as a symbol of gender parity and are chosen by their fellow athletes.
Also in Tokyo, following the positive Coronavirus test for Kara Eaker a Team USA alternate gymnast the team has decided to forgo staying in the Olympic Village. In a statement USA Gymnastics said yesterday that the squad had always intended to stay at a hotel instead of the sealed-off 109 acre waterfront section of Tokyo that was reserved for the 11,000 athletes competing in the games. Eaker and fellow alternate Leanne Wong have been placed into quarantine. Currently, there are more than 70 Coronavirus cases tied to the games.
