What is the White House turkey pardon all about?

Two very lucky turkeys get to avoid the dinner table for a podium at the White House today, thanks to the annual presidential turkey pardon.

President Barack Obama will meet with Tater and Tot, both 18 weeks old and 40 pounds each, for the annual tradition for the eighth and final time.

The history of the turkey pardon is unclear, although some believe the tradition goes back to Abe Lincoln when his son Tad begged his father to pardon the turkey their family had planned to eat, and he let the bird go. Harry Truman was the first president to have a photo op with a turkey in 1949.
