American Airlines Canceled Over 1,500 Flights This Weekend
American Airlines canceled more than 1,500 flights this past weekend citing issues with weather and staffing shortages. On Friday 738 flights were delayed and 342 flights were cancelled, Saturday the airline canceled 543 flights and yesterday 634 flights were canceled according to FlightAware. Staffing shortages are due to the layoffs, buyouts and early retirement packages that were offered during the Coronavirus pandemic. American Airlines expects more flight crews to return during the holiday season and 1,800 flight attendants are set to return from leave today with more expected to be back on the job by December 1st. They also plan to increase hiring in the fourth quarter. Other airlines have also had to cancel numerous flights in recent months with Southwest canceling more than 2,000 earlier in October.
