Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Began Erupting Yesterday, Could Last Months

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano began erupting yesterday afternoon for the first time since May. Officials are monitoring the situation but say there is no present danger to residents nearby on Hawaii’s big island. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory had raised it’s watch alert level earlier in the day yesterday after recording an increased seismic reading.

The USGS detected a glow within Kilauea’s summit crater at around 3:20 pm indicating an eruption had started. The observatory’s deputy scientist in charge David Phillips said the eruption is within the boundaries of the park and there is no threat to life or infrastructure but the eruption has the potential to last for months.
