Death Toll Rises as Search and Rescue Continues Following Hurricane Ida
The death toll has risen in the east as search and rescue mission continue following Hurricane Ida. At least 46 people have died in six states including Connecticut, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia due to torrential rains, heavy winds and flooding brought to the area by the 5th strongest storm to make landfall in U.S. history.
Since the hurricane made landfall, President Biden has activated more than 6,000 members of the national guard in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and other states to support with search and rescue efforts. Biden and his team have also been working with private companies to accelerate the restoration of power and cell phone services in Louisiana. He is scheduled to visit the state today to survey storm damage and meet with state and local officials.
