It’s time for a little kitchen talk that may save us a few trips to the grocery store and make the things we get from there last longer and we’ll waste less. Stop washing your fruits and veggies before you store them. It’s best to do that right before you use it. Two reasons. Bacteria can grow on produce while its in the refrigerator or on the counter. And the moisture left on the skin causes the produce to spoil faster, especially berries. When it comes to the produce, separate them before they kill each other! We shouldn’t store the fruit in the same bag as the vegetables or even close to one another. Many fruits emit ethylene gas to help them ripen. But that can cause the veggies to spoil quickly. So give your bananas their own space. Your milk may be begging for a new space too. If you keep it in your refrigerator door, move it.The door tends to be warmer, causing your milk to spoil sooner. Store milk on shelves where it’s cooler. Also, if you serve milk in a pitcher do not pour it back into the original container. The key to lasting milk is not to break the cold chain from the store to home to the refrigerator. Put your leafy greens in a vase. Or just some water! Herbs like basil, cilantro, mint and parsley should be treated like flowers. Trim their root ends then put them in jars of cool water and set them aside at room temperature and use them as soon as possible. If you know you can’t eat them within a few days, go ahead and freeze some of them in a plastic freezer bag.
