Execution Dates Set For Two Inmates Suing The State Over New Execution Law

The South Carolina Supreme Court has issued an execution date for a death row inmate that’s suing the state over the new law which forces inmates to choose between a firing squad or the electric chair. Court docs show the date for Freddie Owens’ execution is set for June 25th. The notice comes less than a week after the court set an execution date for another man on death row, Brad Sigmon. The lawsuit filed by both Sigmon and Owens’ attorney earlier this month argues that they can’t be electrocuted or shot because they were sentenced under an old law that made lethal injection their default method for execution.
