Buttigieg Gives Deadline For Infrastructure Package Negotiations
Even with Congress on recess, this week will be a crucial week for President Biden’s Infrastructure Package. On Sunday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said “I think we are getting pretty close to a fish-or-cut-bait moment, we believe in this process, but we also very much agree that this can’t go on forever.” A final decision about the package isn’t expected to be announced until lawmakers return next week but Buttigieg said “we need a clear direction by June 7th.”
After a series of counterparts, Republicans and President Biden are roughly $700 billion apart from striking a deal. Last week the GOP made a $928 billion counter offer to amend Biden’s $1.7 trillion proposal, Biden’s original plan was for $2.2 trillion. The lead GOP negotiator Senator Shelly Caputo is set to speak with the President this week.
