Campaign Underway for Myrtle Beach Officer to Receive Medal of Honor Posthumously

Watch Carolina AM weekday mornings at 9 a.m.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Stephen Phillis was serving during Desert Storm in Kuwait when his wingman, 1st Lt. Rob Sweet’s plane went down. Phillis followed protocol then went beyond by drawing enemy fire upon himself in hopes of giving Sweet a chance as as he parachuted out of his burning plane. His wingman survived. Phillis did not. When Phillis’s former boxing buddy, who also served in the Air Force, heard the story he started a campaign to have a Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to his fallen friend and hero. Capt. Phillis lived in Myrtle Beach.
