Millions of Johnson and Johnson Vaccines Discarded

Millions of Johnson and Johnson vaccines had to be thrown away after an ingredient mix-up. 15 million doses were ruined after employees at Emergent Bio-solutions, a production facility in Baltimore, reportedly mixed-up two vaccine ingredients. That mix-up prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to delay shipments pending an investigation.  U.S. officials say the vaccine spoilage should not impact plans to provide enough vaccines to immunize every adult by May.

In a statement, the company said it expects to deliver it’s vaccine at a rate of more than one billion doses by the end of 2021. Johnson and Johnson said quality control found the batch which never advanced to the filling and finishing stages of the manufacturing process. The doses of the vaccine that are currently being shipped nationwide were produced in the Netherlands. Emergent Bio-solutions manufactures both the Johnson and Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines.
