Feds on Alert After Online Threats of Another Potential Attack on the Capitol
Federal agents are on high alert today after warnings of more potential threats against the U.S. Capitol building. An intelligence bulletin issued earlier this week warned that a group of violent militia extremists had discussed plans to take control of the Capitol and remove Democratic lawmakers, as well as encouraged thousands of others to join them. The extremists appear to believe President Trump will reclaim the presidency today after a conspiracy theory circulated online claiming March 4th was the real Inauguration Day. This may be because between 1793 and 1933, Inauguration Day often fell on March 4th or sometime around then. While this is most likely just online chatter, federal officials don’t want to find themselves unprepared and faced with another violent, out of control mob again and are ramping up security measures. The House has also changed its schedule due to these warnings, moving a vote set for today to last night. However, the Senate will be in session today to resume discussions on the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill.
