House Passes Massive $1.9 Trillion Coronavirus Stimulus Relief Bill
In a major win for the American people, the house passed President Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill. The Democratic-controlled House voted 219 to 212 in favor of the package early Saturday morning following a long day of debates. The vote was split largely on party lines, with every Republican voting against the bill. Two Democrats, Jared Golden of Maine and Kurt Schrader of Oregon, also joined them. Now the bill is expected to head to the Senate where the minimum wage increase provision is likely to be shot down. What will most likely remain in the bill are the $1,400 direct payments, a $400-a-week federal unemployment bonus, a per-child allowance of up to $3,600 for one year, and billions of dollars to distribute the coronavirus vaccines, assist schools and local governments, extend eviction moratoriums and more. Lawmakers hope to have this round of stimulus relief passed by mid-March which is when unemployment benefits run out.
