No Officers Charged by NY Grand Jury in Death of Daniel Prude
A New York grand jury has declined to charge any officers in connection to the death of Daniel Prude. 41-year-old Prude died last March amid a mental health episode. His family called police after he ran outside nude and screaming he had Covid-19. Responding Rochester officers handcuffed and tased him. They also placed a spit hood over his head and physically restrained him by kneeling on him. Prude went unconscious, was declared brain dead, and passed several days later. His cause of death was determined to be suffocation. “Excited delirium” and acute amounts of PCP were also listed as contributing factors. New York Attorney General Letitia James said they presented the most comprehensive case they could, but the jury ultimately ruled in favor of the officers. James and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren hope Prude’s death will not be in vain as they are working towards implementing extensive police reform within their ranks following the incident. Over a dozen peaceful “Black Lives Matter” protests broke out again last night following the news.
