Gov. Cuomo Under Investigation for Underreporting Covid Nursing Home Deaths
A U.S attorney and the FBI have launched a preliminary investigation into Governor Andrew Cuomo. This comes shortly after news broke that Cuomo and his administration had been underreporting coronavirus-related nursing homes deaths. New York was one of the hardest hit states, especially in the early days of the pandemic. It was only confirmed last month by the state’s attorney general that as much as 50% of nursing home deaths were underreported. 15,000 deaths have now been disclosed, a wide gap from the previous 8,500 reported. Cuomo’s top aide claims they did this to avoid being investigated by the Trump Administration who they believe would’ve used the information against them. Earlier this week the governor acknowledged that “things should have been done differently” and “lessons were learned.” Now the FBI and a Brooklyn U.S. attorney are looking into his actions. The ordeal has made both Democratic and Republican lawmakers in New York question their decision to grant Cuomo emergency powers during the Covid crisis.
