Charges Dropped Against the ‘Central Park Karen’
The ‘Central Park Karen’ incident has come to a surprising conclusion. Last May, a video went viral of a woman calling the police on a bird-watcher. Amy Cooper was walking her dog in Central Park when she was approached by Christian Cooper, no relation. Christian asked Amy to leash her dog and as they continued to argue, Amy became increasingly agitated. She eventually did call police to tell them “an African American man was threatening” her life. Following the incident, Amy was fired from her job and temporarily had her dog taken away. A charge for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree was also brought against her by Manhattan prosecutors. However, after Amy completed five mandatory “psychoeducation and therapy” sessions, the prosecutors have since decided to drop the misdemeanor criminal charge. It’s believed the therapy sessions helped her learn to “appreciate that racial identities shape our lives” and that “we cannot use them to harm ourselves or others.” Christian has yet to comment on the matter.
