Congress Turns Focus to Covid-19 Stimulus Relief Bill

Speaking of the Senate impeachment trial, with the proceedings now concluded, Congress is able to move onto other important issues. The least of which is the $1.9 trillion dollar Covid stimulus package Democrats have been promising for weeks. The most recent effort to pass the bill was an hours-long budget resolution held earlier this month. It paved the way for Democrats to be able to pass their bill in a 51 to 50 vote, meaning they will not need bipartisan support to offer the much needed relief to Americans. However, President Biden is still signaling he would like to come to some sort of agreement. This will most likely mean reducing the bill’s price tag. It’s unclear how much money the White House is willing to give up, and whether that will be enough to secure bipartisan support, but the president has made it clear that acting more aggressively is better than doing too little. Passing the bill within the next few weeks is becoming increasingly imperative as an estimated 11.4 million workers will lose their unemployment benefits between mid-March and mid-April.
