WHO Investigation Reveals Likely Origins of Coronavirus
The World Health Organization said it’s unlikely the coronavirus came from a lab in Wuhan, China. Speculation was fueled early on in the pandemic that the Covid-19 virus may have been manufactured or accidentally leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a lab that has been heavily involved in coronavirus research. The theory has long been dismissed by the global scientific community and Chinese researchers working at the lab. Now the WHO is backing their claims after an extensive investigation. A panel of health experts with WHO said their data shows the virus was most likely transmitted from animal to human. This could either be from direct transmission or through the trade of frozen products. The panel added that it may have been circulating for weeks before it was identified in Wuhan and could have originated in other regions. However, more targeted research is now needed to determine just exactly how, when, where and which “intermediary host species” first introduced the virus to the human species.
