2nd Senate Impeachment Trial of President Trump Begins Tomorrow
The historic second Senate impeachment trial of former President Trump will kick off tomorrow and here’s what you need to know. The president stands accused of inciting the riot on the Capitol, led by his supporters, on January 6th. His defense team is set to argue the president was simply using his right to free speech and that the entire trial is unconstitutional seeing as he is no longer in office. Senate President Pro Temporee Patrick Leahy is leading the trial as opposed to a chief justice. The Democratic impeachment managers believe they have an open and shut case, however they will need at least 17 Republicans to side with them if they hope to succeed. As of now, it’s believed there will not be enough votes to convict former President Trump. Last year’s impeachment only saw one Republican vote for impeachment and that was Senator Mitt Romney. And last month, 45 Republicans voted to dismiss the trial as unconstitutional. This included Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, whose vote is crucial. He says he is currently undecided and will “keep an open mind.”
