East Coast Braces Itself as Massive Winter Storm Hits

More than 110 million people are under winter weather alerts as a huge snowstorm slams into the East Coast. The National Weather Service has reported snowfall rates may reach up to two inches an hour. States from Pennsylvania well into the New England area are predicted to receive up to two feet of snow with wind gusts hitting highs of 50 mph. Mass power outages and even coastal flooding can also be expected. This is not only the first big storm of the new year, but it’s also forecasted to rival some of the biggest snowfalls seen in the region in over five years. New York City has declared a state of emergency, closing down schools, canceling a majority of their flights, restricting nonessential travel and rescheduling coronavirus vaccinations. New Jersey is also in a state of emergency. Authorities have now been granted the ability to shut down roads and evacuate homes. All public transportation has been suspended statewide today. The storm is expected to continue and move further north over the next day or so.
