Twitter CEO Defends Permanent Ban of President Trump

Twitter’s CEO is speaking up days after permanently banning President Trump from the platform. Jack Dorsey defended their decision yesterday, saying “we faced an extraordinary and untenable circumstance.” Their ultimate focus was on public safety. Seeing as online speech has the ability to lead to offline harm, they felt it necessary to issue the total ban. Dorsey also seems to have no qualms with users flocking to other sites in solidarity with President Trump. It’s reported the social media platform lost nearly $5 billion in market value following their ban. However, Dorsey did admit the actions taken against the president did not bring him any joy. He also acknowledged they may have emboldened other social media companies to issue similar bans and restrictions. He further believes their ban may add to further division in the U.S. and “limit the potential for clarification, redemption, and learning.” He suggested they may also have set a possibly “dangerous precedent”.
