Congress Set to Certify Electoral College Votes Tomorrow
Congress is finally set to certify the Electoral College votes tomorrow in the highly contested 2020 election. Verifying the vote count is a constitutional requirement that is usually procedural, but this year has much more significance. If all goes according to plan, President-elect Joe Biden will receive 306 votes to President Trump’s 232. However, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said they expect up to six electoral votes to be challenged during tomorrow’s debate. Over a dozen Republican lawmakers also intend to object to Biden’s wins in several swing states, although their efforts are likely to fail. In anticipation for tomorrow’s event, the city of Washington, D.C. is taking extra precautions. More than 300 National Guard members have been mobilized. This is also largely due to the fact that pro-Trump demonstrations will take place simultaneously. While the guard will mainly be used to help control crowds and manage traffic, they’re prepared for unrest. They’re urging residents to avoid confrontations, as well as the area in general, and to be cautious.
