House Votes to Increase Stimulus Checks to $2,000
The House has passed a measure to increase covid stimulus checks for most Americans to 2,000 dollars. Just enough republicans crossed the aisle yesterday to get the Caring for Americans with Supplemental Help Act of 2020 through the chamber. Because the measure was passed “under suspension”, meaning, fast-tracked without the ability to add amendments, it needed a two-thirds vote. It passed 275 to 134. President Trump had been urging republicans to increase the 600 dollar payments on the relief bill he signed Sunday. However, many of them were against how much it would increase the price tag of the bill. Now, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must decide whether to bring the measure to the senate floor as a standalone bill. The new round of stimulus checks could possibly start being distributed this week, but with the last one, it took months for the bulk of Americans to see the first $1,200 check. The new roll out will also be rough for the IRS, since the agency is already preparing for tax season.
