President Trump Signs Covid Relief and Government Funding Bill
The federal government will stay open now that President Trump has signed a coronavirus relief and omnibus funding bill. But, he’s already trying to rescind aspects of the legislation. President Trump’s signature will narrowly avoid a government shutdown. But, since he waited so long to sign the bill, millions of Americans are likely to lose some unemployment benefits and, already the White House has sent requests to congress to freeze funding in specified programs for 45 days. During that time legislators could hypothetically vote to agree with the President but, that’s unlikely. After 45 days, the funds should be available for use. That means the president’s requests are unlikely to have any practical effect. President Trump’s treasury secretary and congressional leaders negotiated the legislation. Then, after congress passed the bill, he said he wanted larger stimulus checks for Americans. Democrats backed that idea but pPesident Trump’s fellow republicans didn’t support it.
