Alex Padilla Nominated to Replace Kamala Harris as CA State Senator
Alex Padilla has been tapped to replaced Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as Senator of California. Governor Gavin Newsom reportedly broke the news to him yesterday via a video conference. Padilla responded by saying he was honored and humbled by the consideration. The nomination of the 47-year-old State Secretary is historic since, if elected, he will become the first Mexican American to hold the position in the state’s 170-year history. 1/3 California residents are Hispanic, making them the largest Latino population in the country at 15 million people. Padilla comes from a modest family background and is highly educated, having received a degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. His appointment is not only a huge step forward for diversity, but for inclusivity within the government, which he has spent his entire political career fighting for. Some believe with Padilla’s background, he is one of the most prepared people to serve in the U.S. Senate.
