Over 70 West Point Cadets Accused in Major Cheating Scandal
Dozens of West Point cadets have been implicated in a massive cheating scandal. The school is currently conducting virtual classes due to the pandemic. A spokesman for the academy confirmed 73 cadets were accused of cheating on an online calculus exam in May after instructors discovered “irregularities” during the grading process. 72 freshmen were connected to the misconduct alongside one sophomore. An investigation into the incident has so far led to the exoneration of two due to lack of evidence. Four other cases were dropped after the students resigned. Of the remaining 67 cadets, 55 have admitted to cheating. They’ve been enrolled in a six-month ethics rehabilitation program and will be on probation for the rest of their academic careers. The other accused cadets are still facing administrative hearings and their penalties could be as extreme as expulsion. The last time the military academy saw a cheating scandal of this size was in 1976 after 153 upperclassmen resigned or were expelled over an electrical engineering exam.
