Federal Execution Scheduled for Today Despite Attempts to Halt Proceedings
Another federal execution is scheduled for today after a judge denied a request to pause proceedings. The now 40-year-old Brandon Bernard was convicted for a 1999 double murder and robbery in Texas. Bernard was 18 at the time and not the mastermind to the plot that killed Todd and Stacie Bagley at the Fort Hood military base. But after his accomplice, Christopher Vialva, shot the two in the head, Bernard lit a car on fire while they were still inside. Todd was killed by his gunshot wound, but Stacie died from smoke inhalation. Vialva was executed on September 24th and Bernard is set to become the ninth federal prisoner to be executed this year after a 17-year hiatus was ended. While Bernard’s lawyers try to appeal the judge’s decision and present their case to the president for a possible pardon, other high-profile figures are doing the same. This includes a plea from Kim Kardashian who publicly asked President Trump to grant Bernard a ‘commutation and allow him to live out his sentence in prison.’
