FDA Meets to Discuss Coronavirus Vaccine as U.S. Reports Worst Single-Day Death Toll
Yesterday marked one of the deadliest events in U.S. history after 3,100 people died from the coronavirus. The most recent record-breaking single-day death toll ever recorded was announced by Johns Hopkins University. The total number of Covid-19 related fatalities is now at least 289,000. Yesterday also saw over 221,000 new infections and a new high in hospitalizations. This includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and other U.S. territories. Nationwide we’re now at more than 15.5 million cases with the U.S. still holding the record for most cases and most deaths reported globally. All this comes the same day a group of advisers to the FDA are meeting to discuss emergency use of the experimental Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine. The UK was the first western country to approve it last week, with Canada following suit yesterday. The meeting is expected to last all day as experts scrutinize the safety and effectiveness of the drug. It’s believed they will offer their recommendation with distribution expected to begin immediately.
