Severe Winter Storm Causes Chaos in New England Region
A nor’easter that tore through the New England area left hundreds of thousands without power. The majority of the region was covered with heavy, wet snow this weekend. The strongest winds were recorded in Provincetown, on the tip of Cape Cod, at 90 mph with central Massachusetts receiving the most snowfall of up to 12 inches. Snow and ice has created dangerous road conditions and caused at least two major accidents on Rhode Island’s highways. This storm also caused significant tree and limb damage. Widespread power outages were reported in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire that impacted over 200,000 people. By yesterday afternoon, power had been restored to more than 50,000 people but it’s unclear when it will be back for everyone. Experts say based on previous storms, it could be three to five days. The Weather Service has warned residents against traveling across the region for now, due to low visibility and continued windy and wet conditions.
