Justice Department Investigating Possible Pay-for-Presidential Pardon Scheme
The Justice Department is investigating a possible “secret lobbying scheme.” According to court records unsealed yesterday, the DOJ is looking into the possibility that presidential pardons were granted in exchange for bribes. Agents reportedly raided offices and digital devices of unidentified individuals near the end of the summer which led to the discovery of allegedly incriminating activity. The documents were heavily redacted and do not reveal a timeline for the alleged plot or the names of anyone involved. While this comes as President Trump is rumored to have discussed preemptively pardoning family members before leaving office, there’s currently no indication that he or his administration are related to this. DOJ investigators also stated that “no government official was or is currently a subject or target of the investigation disclosed in this filing.” To date, no one has been publicly charged. The White House has declined to comment but President Trump dismissed it all as fake news on Twitter.
