Pfizer Says Covid Vaccine is 95% Effective

Pfizer will file for emergency authorization for its new coronavirus vaccine with the FDA on Friday. The final analysis of Pfizer’s new vaccine confirms that it is 95-percent effective with no safety concerns. An independent group monitoring the phase three clinical trial says the vaccine even proved effective in higher risk, older adults. In the study, 170 patients contracted covid-19; nearly all of those, 162 of them, received the placebo. The 95-percent effectiveness statistic came from only eight of the thousands of vaccinated patients catching coronavirus. The only side effect reported was fatigue, which was reported in fewer than four percent of patients after the second dose of vaccine. Pfizer expects to begin shipping the vaccine by as early as next month. Based on current projections, the companies expect to produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion in 2021.
