Top Pentagon Officials Resign After Termination of Defense Secretary Esper
New concerns are being raised as several top Pentagon officials have either resigned or been fired in the last few days. On Monday, President Trump fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper after the two had been publicly clashing in recent months over several issues. This was swiftly followed by the resignations of James Anderson, the acting undersecretary for policy; Joseph Kernan, the undersecretary for intelligence; and Jen Stewart, who was Esper’s chief of staff. According to Kernan, only his departure had been “planned for several months.” The sudden shakeup is starting to raise national security concerns, both within the Pentagon and among Democrats, especially after all of those Defense Department positions were filled by assumed ‘Trump loyalists.’ It’s unclear what the president hopes to achieve through these new controversial promotions. At the very least, critics believe it will add to a sense of chaos already being felt across the country. Fortunately, a senior defense official confirmed the worst of it seems to be over.
