President Trump Fires Defense Secretary Mark Esper

President Trump has now fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper after hinting he might do so weeks ago. He made the announcement on his Twitter yesterday, adding Esper was immediately replaced by Christopher Miller, who serves as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Esper and the president have had an increasingly tense relationship these last few months. It includes disagreements over issues such as renaming military bases and pulling troops from Afghanistan so soon. Esper also came out publicly condemning the president’s use of military troops against protesters and more. It’s reported Esper accepted his termination notice without resistance and even had a resignation letter prepared weeks in advance as rumors swirled about his possible firing. Many are wondering now if the president will fire anyone else as his term comes to an end. He’s expressed growing frustrations with people such as CIA Director Gina Haspel and FBI Director Christopher Wray. Once his allies, the president now feels they’ve developed growing agendas against him.
