Potentially Successful Vaccine Announced as U.S. Tops 10 Million Covid-19 Cases
Yesterday the U.S. topped ten million confirmed Covid-19 cases as the deadly third wave continues. We reached this new milestone in just 10 days, the highest rate of infections since the start of the outbreak. Daily infections have surpassed 100,000 cases five times in the past seven days, with a worldwide record of over 130,000 cases this weekend. The U.S. is also beginning to report an average of over 1,000 deaths a day. While this seems grim, great news has been recently announced on the vaccine front. The drug maker Pfizer, who worked independently from Operation Warp speed and the U.S. government, revealed early results that suggests it’s vaccine might be 90% effective. Dr. Anthony Fauci referred to this as an “extraordinary break through”. Pfizer is now on track to apply for Emergency-Use Approval from the FDA later this month. Their main challenge now is formulating a coherent distribution plan. Eli Lilly’s Covid-19 monoclonal antibody treatment has also just become the first of its kind in the world to receive Emergency-Use Approval from the FDA.
