Violence Breaks Out Following Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Philadelphia
Outrage broke out over night in Philadelphia following the fatal shooting of a black man armed with a knife. Around 4 p.m. yesterday, officers responded to the scene of a neighborhood for reports of a person wielding a weapon. Upon arrival, 27-year-old Walter Wallace Jr. did not immediately comply with officers’ requests to drop his weapon and they opened fire in the middle of the street. Wallace collapsed after being struck in the shoulder and chest. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Nobody else was injured. The entire incident was caught on camera by multiple witnesses and police body cam footage. Those officers have not been publicly identified yet, but they have been put on desk duty pending an investigation. Hundreds then took to the streets last night. There were reports of police vehicles and dumpsters set on fire, looting, and heavy projectiles thrown at officers. At least 30 were injured, including one female officer who broke her leg after being hit by a car. All officers have since been released from the hospital and over 30 protesters have been arrested so far.
