Protests Reignite After Former Officer Derek Chauvin Released on Bond
Former Officer Derek Chauvin has been released from prison after posting his $1 million dollar bond. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25th. Viral video footage of him kneeling on Floyd’s neck is what initially sparked the unrelenting nationwide protests this summer, which continue to persist now. His release was conditional, however those terms were kept private. It’s also unclear who paid the bond. All four of the ex-officers involved in the incident are now out on bail and that news was not met with quiet resistance either. More demonstrators took to the city’s streets immediately following the announcement. It’s reported Governor Tim Walz mobilized 100 guardsmen, 100 state troopers and 75 conservation officers at the request of Minneapolis city leaders “out of an abundance of caution”. Late last night, several people were arrested after refusing to disperse on orders by the Minnesota State Patrol.
