Democrats, Republicans Already Clashing Over Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Replacement

On Friday, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg passed away from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87. Now the battle to find her replacement is underway. With just six weeks until the election, many believe voters should decide the fate of the next justice. Especially since whoever makes the decision has the power to tip the balance of the court towards a Republican majority. After Justice Anton Scalia’s death during the 2016 election year, former President Obama was barred by Republicans from electing a new justice. But despite clear opposition from the left, President Trump announced he’ll choose a candidate this week, saying it’s his obligation. He also confirmed he’s looking to nominate a female candidate. Judges Amy Coney Barrett and Barbara Lagoa are alleged to be on his short list. Ultimately, the decision will be left to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has promised to do all they can to block a final decision before the election. Former Vice President Joe Biden has also been asked to name his potential picks.
