Family of Breonna Taylor Awarded $12 Million in Historic Settlement
In a historic settlement, the city of Louisville has agreed to pay the family of Breonna Taylor $12 million. The 26-year-old EMT was shot and killed by police back in March after entering her apartment on a “no knock” narcotics search warrant in the middle of the night. Along with the massive payment, the city will bring new reforms to their police department. No-knock warrants were banned within the city, but now all search warrants must seek approval by a senior officer before being carried out, among other changes. This is possibly the largest pay out for a black woman killed by police in the U.S.
However, not everyone is content with the settlement. Some believe the city was premature in offering the money, suggesting they should have held off until a full investigation was conducted. Others are unhappy due to the fact that the city did not press charges against the officers involved. It’s believed Taylor’s family, friends, and boyfriend will continue to seek justice for her in court.
