Over 1,000 Visas Held by Chinese Students, Researchers Revoked

Over 1,000 U.S. visas have been revoked from Chinese students and researchers in another escalation of tensions between the countries. This comes following a proclamation President Trump signed back in May promising to take action against Chinese nationals believed to be stealing sensitive data or intellectual property from the U.S. to be used by the Chinese military. Those recently targeted were determined to be “high” security risks. The U.S. State Department said those expelled “represent a small subset of the total number of Chinese students and scholars coming to the United States.” They added, “We continue to welcome legitimate students and scholars.” China has been quick to respond, accusing the U.S. of racial discrimination. They’ve also condemned the move as a violation of the students’ human rights. It’s reported around 370,000 students from China enrolled in U.S. colleges between 2018-19.
