Police Chief, Entire Command Staff Resign Following Death of Daniel Prude
The police chief and entire command staff of the Rochester, New York department resigned yesterday. This news comes days after Chief La’Ron Singletary denied any rumors of resignation, adding he was committed to helping reform the city following the death of Daniel Prude which was ruled a homicide by suffocation while in police custody. However, as outrage continued and allegations were made accusing the chief of a cover up, he and a number of others decided to step down or were demoted. During his official statement, Singletary insisted it was his decision and that the cover up rumors aren’t “based on facts” and not what he stands for. Mayor Lovely Warren said that “There may be a number of others that will decide to leave, as well.” Singletary will remain in charge for the remainder of the month. He, along with the other staff, will be able to draw on their pensions and health benefits following their exits.
