Family of Daniel Prude Demands Justice Following his Death in Police Custody
Extremely disturbing footage of the death of a black man in police custody has caused more outrage in Rochester, New York.
Early March 23rd, 41-year-old Daniel Prude ran out of his house during a mental health episode. He was seen nude in the middle of a road, shouting he had Covid-19, and tried to break into a car. When officers arrived, they handcuffed Prude, tased him, placed a spit hood over his face, and further physically restrained him by kneeling on him. Prude soon became sick and unresponsive. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was declared brain dead and on March 30th he was pulled off life support. His death was ruled a homicide from “complications of asphyxia in the setting of a physical restraint” with “excited delirium” and acute amounts of PCP listed as contributing factors. However, this incident was not made public until yesterday when the police body cam footage was released. Prude’s family has referred to it as “cold-blooded murder” and are demanding the officers be fired and arrested. The New York Attorney General has launched a full, “transparent” investigation.
